IELTS exam-What is it and why is it required?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing Standards. It is a Standard English language testing examination that a person moving to other country is required to pass. For Canada Immigration too, IELTS is the mandatory requirement. You cannot start PR visa processing till your IELTS scores are ready.

It is mandatory for every applicant to appear for IELTS, whether English-speaker or not. This is because Canadian government wants to ensure that you are familiar with English language and can blend in the country both professionally and socially.

Without enough proficiency in English language, you cannot immigrate to Canada.

IELTS score requirements:

 IELTS Examination Pattern:

There are two types of an IELTS examination test. One is academic and another is general training.

For the purpose of immigrations, the candidate has to give general training examination.

IELTS general training exam has format of a modules where candidates has to perform individually in each of these modules:

  • Reading Section
  • Listening Section
  • Writing Section
  • Speaking Section

In total, to complete each of these modules, a candidate gets a time duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes. 

Tips to Score Better in IELTS Examination:

Reading Tips:

Time allowed- 60 minutes

Number of Questions- 40

  • Reading books, magazines, newspapers and other texts can improve your reading skills.
  • Try reading out complex words from a dictionary and repeat them from time to time
  • Do not fake accent, be original in your approach 

Listening Tips:

Time allowed- 30 minutes

Number of Questions- 4 recordings

  • Listening will improve by listening to monologues, English conversations or lectures (without sub-titles) on YouTube or other channels
  • Listening needs focus and concertation so you can also start doing meditation so that listening skills can be brushed. 

Writing Tips:

Time allowed: 60 minutes

Number of Questions: Task 1 and Task 2

  • Start interpreting graphs, pie charts, diagrams, maps etc. into words
  • Start maintaining a journal and record everything you have done during your time of the day
  • Practice writing in correct grammar and not in sms lingos 

Speaking Tips:

Time allowed: 15 minutes

Number of Questions: Part 1 and Part 2

  • Start conversing in English more often and regularly
  • Idea is to be more confident while speaking and not the usage of glossy words

How to Get Success in IELTS:

IELTS exam requires you to get overall score of 6.5 which is 6 bands in each module. However, you has to have a good overall score, say 9 or 10 if you want your Permanent Resident Visa application to be among top rankers in the pool.
